Pastor’s Piece

Most of us like something “different”, as long as it’s pleasant, of course! We look forward to the warmer weather after winter, to holidays, to friends coming to stay – anything that’s out-of-the-ordinary. And yes, thank you, Tony and I had a lovely time in New Zealand, spending time with my family and our NZ friends, as well as seeing some new places. Needless to say shared meals were a major highlight - with family and friends but sometimes with complete strangers.

The major Christian festivals of Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost all fall within a period of five months. And the on the Monday immediately after Pentecost, in the words of the Anglican lectionary, “Ordinary Time resumes today”. And that is where we live out most of our days, in ordinary time. The high days and holidays are just that, something different. But the majority of our time – seven months of each year in terms of the Christian calendar - is spent in just ordinary day-to-day living and worshipping.

Maybe that is why, in the stories recorded in the Gospels about Jesus earthly life, so much is said about Jesus sharing with others in the ordinary things of life. Yes, he celebrated the Jewish festivals with his disciples, but he also shared ordinary meals with friends like Mary, Martha and Lazarus or with complete strangers such as Zaccheus. He went where people were and was genuinely interested in their day-to-day lives and what they had to say. Of course he wanted to tell them about the Good News of the Kingdom of God, but for most of the time he did that by going about his everyday life and meeting people where they were.

Within the Christian Church we have our ways of commemorating and celebrating the different religious festivals. But they take up only a very small part of the year. The greater challenge is how we live out our faith in “Ordinary Time”.

Every blessing

Your pastor,

Sue

David's Song

The Lord will always hold my hand and always guard my door
He will tend my every need, I'll want for nothing more.

He'll take me to the promised land, where riches never cease
And a place that is so quiet, where I'll find perfect peace.

He will ease my aching heart and give me life anew
And he will always light my path, show me the way to go

And when I feel so ill and filled with devil's fear
He will warm away the chill, for He is always near.

When others come to do me harm, I'll not run and hide
For he will come and take His place, standing at my side.

And when His hands reach out to make His sign upon my brow
My life will be so full of joy that it will overflow.

All things good and all things kind I will have in store
And I will live within His heaart, now and for evermore.
